Tokitsu-Ryu is the result of a study that began in the mid 70s. The first phase culminated in 1983 when, after 10 years of research on traditional karate, Kenji Tokitsu, defined and began to teach a new unarmed combat style, Shaolin-mon.

During the research period that led to its creation, Tokitsu studied and practiced modern karate (Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu), conducting a comparative study of approximately 250 kata currently practiced and taught.

During the years that followed he added the study of various taichi chuan styles (Chen, Yang, Xingyi chuan, baguazhang, Baji chuan, Taiki-ken, Yi chuan) and of martial arts that are part of the Japanese saber tradition (Kenjutsu, Kendo, Iai-do). The elements of the various martial practices are the original ones, rediscovered after years of study, and not deformed by the transmission of information over the years from one school to the other.

Later on, Tokitsu added the results of his research on kiko (qi gong in Chinese) to the practice of Shaolin mon and began a close collaboration with Professor Toshihiko Yayama, , great kiko expert, also head of the surgery and oriental medicine wards of the Saga province hospital of the in Japan.

The formalization and practice of Shaolin-mon via this research process led to the creation of the Jisei-do school in 2000.

The last phase of Master Tokitsu's ongoing research introduced the Energy Dance, a dynamic form made up of articulated sequences of movements that can be adapted to the technical level of the student. In 2002, the style, the method and the school resulting from this long research process were grouped together under the name Tokitsu-Ryu
